Workplace Wellness Programs: Still relevant?

New research has again challenged the effectiveness of workplace wellness programs is not surprising for those of us who have been evaluating what influences workplace stress, health, and well-being. Offering voluntary ‘add-ons’ that add more work to an already overloaded employee miss the the systemic workplace factors that have been shown to directly influence workplace performance and health outcomes: the amount of work, pace of work, and level of control the employee has over their work; supervisor support and psychological safety to ask for and take needed breaks, and built environment factors like lighting, air quality, and acoustics. Of these factors, psychological safety is proving to be a pivotal element in enabling employees to feel safe and supported at work and to prioritize their health and well-being when feeling overloaded.
